We saw it as we approached on our KD cruise and were already impressed–though we were wondering how difficult it was going to be to get up that hill! It turns out, it’s a walk, but it’s not impossible. It’s one of those places that really looks like a castle out of a fairy tale, at least from the outside.

Marksburg sits above the town of Braubach on the Rhine, and it is gorgeous! The castle is the only one on the Rhine that has never been destroyed, and has in fact been lived in for the past 700 years. We decided on Marksburg instead of those three castles simply because it was one of the castles I had heard the most about. Having been to both, I don’t recommend seeing them both in one day, anyway, so I’m glad things worked out the way they did, even if it meant missing out on some castles further south along the Rhine. Woops–I nearly forgot to do my Marksburg review!Īs I mentioned in a previous post, due to leaving Schoenburg late and running into some public transport confusion, the initial plan to visit Rheinfels and Marksburg in the same day fell through.
