Written for Solo Guitar and Orchestra it reveals the composer's great affinity for those two mediums as well as his reverence for the long-standing traditions of Spanish Classical music. I offer this arrangement freely as a humble tribute to Rodrigo’s music, which I both adore and admire in equal measure.The first of Joaquin Rodrigo's attempts at composition for the concerto genre Concierto De Aranjuez quickly became the most popular and recognizable of his works. Ultimately, I hope that freely sharing this arrangement will enable guitarists to perform this extraordinarily beautiful piece of music to as many people as possible all over the world. At this moment in time, it feels like the world needs beauty more than ever. The beauty and honesty of Rodrigo’s melody seems to speak to people in a uniquely direct way – it almost feels that this music has a healing quality. I’m always humbled by the emotions that this music inspires, both for me as a performer and for members of the audience. I know how much this piece of music means to people. Understandably, if you would prefer to perform the piece in its original key of B-minor, as I have often chosen to do so in my own concerts, then you can simply use a capo at the second fret. This is simply to allow for the use of the guitar’s open strings to accompany the melody, thus making the piece less technically demanding for the player. You’ll notice that the key has been changed from B-minor to A-minor for this arrangement. Instead, through arranging this beautiful piece for solo guitar, I hoped to capture some of the atmosphere of Rodrigo’s music so that guitarists might be able to perform this remarkable piece as a solo. It’s worth noting that this arrangement does not attempt to convey the full complexity and nuance of the original concerto, as do to so in a solo context would be as technically demanding for the player as it would be unrewarding for the listener. I hope the fact that Rodrigo himself arranged the piece in such a way gives some validation for the approach that I have taken here, and it is my sincere hope that he might have approved of this arrangement for one guitar. Drawing largely from the composer’s own arrangement of the Adagio movement for guitar and voice, entitled Aranjuez, me pensée, the arrangement that I present here for solo guitar brings together the main themes from the Adagio movement in an abridged format.
Note on the arrangement: I decided to set about arranging the famous Adagio movement from Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez in response to innumerable requests from audience members to perform this piece in my solo concerts.
